We met with Jenna at the Forest City Gallery in downtown London. Jenna has been the Director of the FCG for 9 months. She came back to London, where she completed a BFA in Studio Arts/Major in English at Western, after completing an MFA at NSCAD University in Halifax (www.nscad.ca). Her passion for painting is palpable (say that three times fast!), and she has recently garnered considerable attention as a 2012 finalist for the RBC Canadian Painting Competition that supports emerging artists.
We asked Jenna about how her degrees helped her get where she is now — and she laughed! She explained that she was focused as an undergrad to do well and learn her craft, to be accepted into graduate school for painting, and then to see where hard work and opportunities took her. Her work now as the Gallery Director allows her the freedom to continue to practice her art and to have the pulse on the art community in London. As Gallery Director, she writes grant and sponsorship applications, promotional material, and she presents regularly — her English degree helped with all of these. Her BFA, naturally, gives her the first-hand experience to speak to technique and commitment.
